Christmas Blessings to all! I finally caught up with my Christmas Journal yesterday, and gave thought to posting some of it here today, but there are too many little details left to do before dinner here tomorrow. Matt arrived safely from Denver, there's a bit of snow on the ground, and we are almost ready to celebrate! Have a wonderful holiday! As always, I'll look forward to hearing about yours soon.
One of the best perks of having been on a design team was the opportunity to purchase things at wholesale. I know I never would have bought a Silhouette at full price, but I keep it on my desk and love what it can do. Last night I whipped up a couple of Thank You notes (not yet photographed), but earlier I made a couple cards and a little box. The first card is cased from a Silhouette Blog post. It can't be easily mailed, but it was hand delivered yesterday with a bag of candy.
I used scraps laying on my desk for red and green (Papertrey Ink New Leaf patterned paper.) The tag is from an office supply store, and the little candy candy with Stickles is from Papertrey's "Tiny Treats: Christmas."
I love this card, but realized that there's no room for a message or enclosure if you want the brown to show through. I solved the problem by creating an inside flap of the same brown that lifts up to disclose the message.
And finally, a little box I made to hold one of Sarah's gifts. More New Leaf patterned paper for the circles, and the tag is from Papertrey's "Christmas Countdown" set I purchased for my Christmas Journal this year. (Yes, I'm still working on my Christmas Journal in a not very chronological manner, so I may not post the pages until after the holiday. There have been some challenges with the Simple Stories album, though I love the end result.)
Hope you have a great weekend! Hard to believe it's the last one before Christmas. Matt is scheduled to arrived a little after midnight, and I have my fingers crossed that he'll make his connection and get here on time. We have friends coming for dinner which should help me stay awake until we need to get to the airport.
I've spent the last six days praying for the survivors of the Newtown, CT tragedy and wondering what I could do that would be meaningful aside from urging my Representatives and Senators to pass gun control legislation and look for ways to fund better mental health counseling. This morning I found it on Amber Kemp-Gerstel's blog "Damask Love." Please take time to read her blog post, and to contribute in any way that seems appropriate to you. Just sending a card to be included with the kits would be a wonderful contribution.
Rinda posted a list of Christmas questions on her blog that originated with The BoysMum2Blog and is sponsored by the All the Weigh blog. I’ve been off the computer for nearly a week except to answer important emails, and this seemed like the perfect way to get back to blogging. (Think this will be the next entry in my Christmas Journal, which is coming along, although I’m still not up-to-date.)
Christmas Questions
1. How will you celebrate the holidays this year? This year Matt will be here for five days over Christmas, so Christmas morning will seem more like the old days. We’ll go out to dinner on Christmas Eve, and then to the 11:00 service at church. On Christmas Day, Tracy’s family will arrive for dinner at 4:00. This year we’ll be twenty strong. It’s always a day of laughter and fun!
2. What’s the weather currently like where you live? This year it’s been warmer (40’s-50’s), but lots of rain and gray skies. There’s a storm headed our way later this week, so there’s a chance we’ll have snow by Christmas. It looks like the storm will pass through Denver and not quite here when Matt is traveling. I hope that part of the forecast is correct.
3. Do you decorate your home for the holidays? If so, share a picture please! I love to decorate my house for Christmas and it looks so festive even though I put out fewer decorations every year.
4. What’s your favorite Christmas movie? We’re not big movie watchers, but we used to watch Christmas at Sesame Street every year, even when the kids got older. I know Sarah has a copy ready to share with Caleb.
5. What is your favorite Christmas song? I love singing carols, and my favorite is “Once in Royal David’s City” which is always the first carol sung at the Christmas Eve service.
6. Do you have an advent calendar? I made this advent calendar when Sarah was two years old. We’ve hung it now for 30 years. (And a sneak peek at some new photos of Skylar who was here for dinner on Friday.)
7. Do you prefer colored lights or white lights? We have colored lights. The first year Sarah lived in an apartment Matt, Tracy and I decided to give white lights a try. I’m the only one who liked them, and Sarah threatened to boycott Christmas. (An idle threat, I might add.) Here's a shot of some star bokeh I took for the Twelve Days of Christmas class. I'm sure they'd be beautiful in white as well.
8. What is your favorite food to eat over the holidays? We bake lots of cookies, but the food I look forward to the most are the roasted vegetables my sister-in-law brings to Christmas dinner, and the cheesy potatoes Tracy’s cousin brings.
9. Do you display a live tree, or do you prefer fake trees? We always have a live tree. All the years that the kids were in town, we cut ours down, and made a day of it. Now that’s we’re on our own, we’ve started buying a pre-cut tree. This year’s is beautiful, but getting the tree is not as much fun as it used to be.
10. What would you need to make your holiday perfect his year? I know I’ll have a fabulous holiday, but it would be even more perfect if we could visit Oregon for a few days and spend some time with Sarah, Adam, and Caleb.

I'm really enjoying the Twelve Days of Christmas prompts in Cheryl Johnson's class. I still have several assignments to complete. Waiting for some willing subjects to appear, and for the rain to subside. But here are ten:
Here's the most recent one, although late for the prompt which was "Party, Party." It doesn't match the assignment exactly since Cheryl was looking for somewhat goofy group shots, but it seemed to fit the mood. We bought new bows for our outdoor wreaths, and Tracy held it up and said, "You ought to take this for your Photo-of-the-day." Done!
These were taken for the "Reflection" prompt. I like the first one because I captured both of us in the photo.

Two of the shots for the White Balance exercise. The one on the right is truest to the actual color, but the one with the flash was a favorite of several people who commented on the forum. If I use a flash, I rarely use the pop-up but will use the external flash Tracy bought me a few years ago.
The tag was created for the "Spell It Out" prompt and I photographed it with the dies I used to create it.

I'm enjoying this class, and hope to get out soon to take some photos of Christmas lights at night. I'd like it to stop raining, and hope it doesn't get too cold. (Wishful thinking.)
Today's my brother's birthday. Last year, he came up for a visit shortly after his birthday, but this year we had to "celebrate" over the phone. Here's the birthday card I sent him.
I "cased" it from this card, with just a few changes. I used one of Papertrey's Edger dies and added some Washi tape. I sent an almost duplicate card to Tracy's brother, Greg, earlier this month. The patterned paper is Studio Calico, the star die and stamp from Star Prints (Papertrey), and the sentiment from Paper Smooches. I think this is a pretty good "masculine" design.

It's been a wild week—lots of volunteer commitments, committee meetings, and events. Today after church, a friend and I took time to visit the Image City Photography Gallery for their Holiday Show, and then the contemporary Native Peoples exhibit at the Memorial Art Gallery. Both were well worth our time. Hope you had a good weekend!
Here's a look at my 2012 Manifesto and the first three days. I am enjoying the Simple Stories album and think this might become a favorite for this kind of project.
The last few years, I've just used Shimelle's Manifesto, or skipped it altogether, but this year I ended up using part of hers and adding some of my own journaling. (Oops, just caught a typo/grammar error in the Manifesto, so I'll be reprinting that. I know I proofread it once, but obviously not carefully enough!)
This is the third year in a row Tracy and I have gotten a pre-cut tree. This year's is really lovely, but the process just isn't as much fun as it used to be. Some of my all-time favorite photos of my kids were taken on our annual Christmas tree hunt.
Tracy and I lit the first Advent candle in chapel on Sunday. I printed the text from the bulletin on vellum and decided that was all the journaling this page needed. I'm not sure about the Washi tape, but it does a good job of keeping the vellum in place.
This was the day I did the Festive Photo Walk for Cheryl Johnson's Twelve Days of Christmas class. I really like these 3 X 4 photo slots. I'm not sure whether I'll add two more 4X6 photos to the back of this last page, or whether I'll use those spots for December 4's page. (Still thinking about that one.) Typically, I'm not all that happy when I do a lot of prep work for a project, but this year it seems to be working out just fine.
I have started both Cheryl Johnson's Twelve Days of Christmas class, and Journal Your Christmas with Shimelle. It's going to be hard to keep up with both of them. I'm running one day behind with Cheryl's class, but enjoying it. Before I start posting this year's Christmas Journal, I wanted to be sure to finish up with the Gratitude Journal. This is a bit photo heavy, but I want to get it all posted today. You can see the rest here, here, and here.
11.21 I am NOT a fan of cold weather. My first Subaru came with heated seats. I never knew such a thing existed, but I'm grateful for the all winter long.
11.22 Our Thanksgiving table is a true symbol of the blessings of abundance. So many are without the necessities of life, and I am ever mindful of all I have.
11.23 I grew up in a house filled with music, but didn't inherit my father's gifts. Fortunately, I married into a truly talented family.
11.24 (the day of Bill's Memorial Service) Never more than in times of sorrow am I grateful for the warm, loving extended family. Love and friendship abound in this group.
11.25 I love celebrations of every kind. Today we celebrated Greg's December birthday before he returns to Texas.
11.26 Developing an interest in photography has been a blessing. I love the creative avenues it opened and all the opportunities for continued learning.

11.28 I never take my warm and comfortable home for granted. We've been here for 27 years, and I still love the house and the neighborhood.

11.30 Color is so important in my life–probably because it's gray and brown here half the year. The crayons were the photo prompt for Capture Your 365 today, and a better choice for a photo than the one I had planned.
I ended up with four empty sleeves in the little album I chose, so I made three more quote pages, and a folder to hold my November recap since I won't do my usual scrapbook page with this month's photos.

I wasn't really thinking about doing a gratitude journal until Amy posted about hers (thanks, Amy!), and I'm very glad I took the project on. I took the month off from posting on the Capture Your 365 site, and that was a good break too.
Tomorrow Shimelle's Journal Your Christmas class begins again. This will be my seventh year doing the journal, and I've never tired of it. Earlier this week, I brought out the first six journals which reside in a basket in our living room during the holiday. I flipped through a couple of them, and it brought back memories of things I might well have forgotten if I hadn't captured them in the journals. Over the next month, I'll probably read through all of them again.
This year I actually did some preparation ahead of time. During the October Papertrey release I saw a Simple Stories album that seemed just perfect. It's an 8 X 6 two ring binder, and it might become my new favorite size for single topic scrapbooks. Here's the spine and cover.
The cover is a simple circle cut with Spellbinders Nestabilities and a piece of Teresa Collin's Christmas paper from last year. The holly is cut from felt with Papertrey's Holly Jolly dies. The title is created with my old favorite SEI alpha stickers.

They seem perfect for Christmas, but I decided to embellish most of them. I've left some (above) to embellish as I go along.

The border of the paper is just about the same red as the stamped banners, but sure doesn't look like that in this photo. The banner was stamped and hand cut using Papertrey's Countdown to Christmas stamps–the only new addition to my Christmas collection. The twine came in a Studio Calico kit. I also used the stamp set to create the numbers for the daily pages:
The frame and arrow are die cuts by Papertrey Ink, the button was from my stash. There'll be a photo in the frame eventually.
I saw this idea somewhere and thought I'd pinned in on my Pinterest board, but I don't see it there. This is a Starbucks sleeve from last year, and I'll be using it for journaling. If anyone knows the source, let me know.
One of the things I like the most about this scrapbook is the divided photo pages. I bought some of Ali Edwards digital journaling cards, printed them out and found some subway art on the internet as well.
I'm hoping this will be easy to assemble as we go through December. Several years ago, I gave up trying to respond to all of Shimelle's prompts or to do a page for every day. Shimelle has updated the prompts for this year, so I'm looking forward to some new ideas. Mostly I just want a record of our time as we travel through the Advent season.
You can see the beginnings of this project here and here. When I began the Gratitude Journal, I made a list of words that represented things for which I am truly grateful. While Sarah and Caleb were here, I looked for opportunities to capture photos of them with words I had chosen. Now that they’ve gone back home, it’s back to creating photo opportunities for some of the rest of the list. It hasn't been nearly as easy to keep up with this since they've gone home. I only have four more pages to go, but there are too many for one post, so I'll start with these for today, and finish it up in a day or two.
11.14 OK, so I really don't like flying, but without air travel I would rarely see either of my children. So, yes, I am grateful for air travel!
11.15 The first full day since Sarah and Caleb left. It's a good thing the sun is shining! I am always grateful for sunshine in Rochester.
11.16 Papercrafting has brought me a lot of joy—the ability to creat hand-made gifts, make new friends through blogging, and new opportunities for sharing my passion. (These are the gift tags I made for the family gift exchange this year.)
11.17 Ten years ago I wouldn't have believed the amount of traveling we've done since we retired. I love seeing new places, visiting friends and family, and learning so much about this country. (This is the next trip planned out. We're driving Tracy's mother's van to Florida for her in early January, stopping to see friends in the Cheasapeake Bay, Charlotte, and Stuart, FL before we head to Fort Meyers for a few days.)
11.18 We've belonged to Third Presbyterian for over 30 years. Here we've found friends, support, and opportunities for service.
11.19 I missed Sarah and Caleb the minute I left them at the airport. Thank goodness for Face Time and the ability to SEE them as well as talk to them.
11.20 This man is the best thing that ever happened to me. Kind, patient, loving, supportive, forgiving–the list goes on and on. Lucky me!
It’s once again time for the Papertrey Ink Blog Hop. This time the challenge is to use cover art as an inspiration for your card. I was immediately attracted to the light colored “OZ” on the black paper and started with that. Here's the inspiration photo Nicole posted on the Papertrey blog:
I originally thought I’d add a sentiment in a variety of colors, but loved the tree so much I decided to keep it simple with a red banner. I love the white embossing on black. The berries were colored in with Smooch Lipstick which has a subtle glow to it IRL.
The tree is from one of my favorite Christmas sets, "Believe," and the sentiment is from "Stylish Sentiments Holiday." This is an A2 sized card, so even with the overhanging banner, it will fit into a standard enveloope. Although embossing tends to be more time-consuming (and messy) than I want to do for the many, many holiday cards I make each year, I may make a few more of these before I'm finished.
Before November ends, it's probably time to get my October 365 layout posted. All the supplies except the envelope I used for journaling are from the November Studio Calico kit.

October was iPhonography month in honor of my new iPhone5, and with hopes that I’d learn a bit more about some of my apps. As always, life gets in the way, and I relied mostly on apps I already knew, although I did master HDR Fusion and spent a lot more time with Instagram. I edited almost all the photos on the phone, and relied on Snapseed and Photogene. Editing in Elements is far easier!
Bill passed away peacefully on October 2nd. He was 91 and lived a full life, yet none of us were ready to say good-bye. Scott and Greg flew in for the weekend, and we were able to have some good family time. His memorial service will be next month.
We spent the first weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake with Karen and Mike. . . a new B&B which we loved, a fabulous new winery (Southbrook) and a wonderful production of "Ragtime" at the Shaw Festival.
I went on the Kelby photo walk the 13th of October, but still haven’t edited the photos, and ended up choosing one from the canal for that day. On the 16th we went to Sauders in Seneca Falls, and to the Merry-Go-Round Theater with Mary and Jim for a production of "Nunsense." Mary and I heard Jeffrey Brown at Arts & Lectures. We attended an opening at the Eastman House with Bill and Beryl on the 19th, and won at duplicate on the 20th–a nice surprise. The Children’s Sabbath was October 21st, and I attended a morning prayer service at the Board of Education, church, and then a Presbytery-wide Youth Service in Brockport that afternoon.
The highlight of our month were visits from Sarah, Caleb, and Matt. We had a wonderful weekend — dinner at Mario’s, going to church, a family dinner, and getting together with Betsy and Skylar. Our Halloween Open House was lots of fun, and Caleb was the cutest pumpkin ever! Lots of the photos this month were of fall foliage, and I got lots of great ones along the Erie Canal while walking with Tina and Debbie, at Tinker Park, and on Irondequoit Bay.
I finished The Oath and Sabbath in the Suburbs both of which I loved, and The Unexpected Guest–easy read, and completed 21 cards and 5 layouts.

Three of my good friends have recently had surgery. All of them are recovering nicely, and I thought I'd share the cards I sent them.
"On the Couch Additions" and "Chair-ished" are two of my favorite stamp sets for folks recovering from surgery. The card is from Paper Source and the patterned paper from "Snap" by Simple Stories.
This friend was definitely in need of some sunshine. As she noted, in August the foot surgery and a three-to-four week recovery didn't sound too bad, but now not being able to move around, drive, or take care of projects it's not looking quite so good. I was glad to pull our the "Hello, Sunshine" stamps, as this was the perfect sentiment. A felt sun (Heart2Heart die #6), a Papertrey button, and an old card from the stash (Savvy or A Muse?), and I ended up with a pretty cheerful card.
The card was cased from this card by Kimberly Crawford. It was the perfect sentiment for our cousin's daughter who had rather dreadful complications from her surgery, but is now doing great. The paper is Cosmo Cricket "Boyfriend," the little clothespins and twine are from Michael's, and I generated the sentiment on the computer. I bought her a couple of journals since she's a writer and decided to make my own wrapping paper.
I used Hero Art's Scattered Leaves and a variety of Tim Holtz Distress Inks, utilizing the the rock 'n roll technique with some of the leaves. It was quick and easy. Something I should do more often.

11.7 The love between mother an dchild is one of our most precious gifts. These two warm my heart!
11.8 It's lots of fun watching Caleb learning new things. I'm always grateful for my opportunities to continue learning–there's never enough time to learn it all.
11.9 Books have always been so important to me and to Sarah. I hope Caleb finds the same pleasure in them when he grows up.
11.10 Technology pervades my life and most of the time, I'm very grateful for it. I would have never guessed I'd enjoy e-books as much as I do, and Sarah's another fan.
11.11 I'm so grateful to those who have fought time and again for my freedom. This is the newly dedicated Veteran's Memorial just outside our community garden.
11.12 No words are needed–such a beautiful baby and one of our greatest blessings.
Hope you are having a lovely Saturday. I'm off to a cooking demonstration at one of my favorite specialty shops. Last week they shared appetizers, and every one of them was delicious. The focus today is roasted vegetables–one of our favorites.
Once I read about other's plans to create a gratitude journal, I knew this was something I wanted to do. I needed to keep it simple, and my first thought was to combine it with my Capture Your 365 project with a photograph and a word or two. That's how it started, but yesterday when I was putting it together, I decided I wanted to journal a bit about each entry so I added some tags with journaling on both sides.
Here's the journal. I found this charming photo album in my stash and knew it would work perfectly. The old typewriter key alpha was just perfect–another item from the stash.
The title page was created on an Archiver's journaling card. I cut "grateful" with my Silhouette and used stamps for the date.
Here are the first two pages. Each tag slides in between two photos and the journaling for each is on one tag, so I wanted to keep all the photos back-to-back. This quote by Lemony Snicket was in Real Simple magazine this month, and is just perfect as an introdution.
Here's a look at one of the tags. Since it's difficult to avoid a glare photographing through the photo sleeve, I'll post the photos and the journaling directly to the blog, but you can see what it looks like here:
I decided not to worry about the orientation of the photos so some are landscape and many are portraits. But that doesn't bother me in the least.
So here are the first few days. I'll be back tomorrow with another edition.
11.1 There is nothing better than the laughter in my house when both of my kids are home. Caleb just adds to everyone's delight!
11.2 Blessed is how I feel to have Sarah and Caleb here for an extended visit.
11.3 We saw these blocks in a toy store last spring and knew we had them in the attic. Although Caleb's too young to build with them, tossing them about has been one of his pleasures.
11.4 It's been a long time since Sarah, Julie, and Stephanie have been together. What lovely young women they have become!
11.5 Ellie was here for dinner, and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to capture the four generations together.
11.6 Although I was delighted to have President Obama re-elected, I would be grateful for my right to vote regardless of the outcome.
