Time Out Challenge: Thankful

  • by

I've had more than the usual amount of time to create this weekend. The photos at the end of the post will explain it pretty well. Along with some birthday cards and Valentines which I can't post for awhile, I have a set of thank you cards to enter at the Time Out Challenge: Thankful. It's their 100th challenge which is quite an accomplishment.

Thankful

I pulled out two oldies—Papertrey's "Brushed Off" and Winnie and Walter's "The Big, The Bold, and You." Just by changing the colors of the ink I came up with three quite different feeling cards. I used Hero Art's Ombre pads, which I do have a bit of trouble with. Some look a lot more ombre than others.

3Thanks

I did add a strip of washi tape down the side of one of the cards.

On Friday, our temperature reached 50°. We'd seen warmer temps on Thursday as well, and almost all the snow had melted by the end of the day on Friday.

IMG_7763ed

About 8:00 Friday night, the snow began and didn't let up until mid-day on Saturday. Tracy was down and out with some kind of bug, so Matt came over in the afternoon to snow plow our driveway and sidewalks. He took a yardstick and measured 13 1/2 inches in our front yard.

Needless to say, I was home for the day—and most of today as well. Hope it's warmer and less snowy where you are! Off to check out the inspiration at Time Out Challenges.

Fusion Card Challenge: Mail Call

  • by

I'm excited to be the guest of Michelle Leon for the first Fusion Card Challenge of 2018: Mail Call. The inspiration piece at Fusion always has two parts:  a photograph and a sketch. You can opt to use one or both. The Design Team has lots of inspiration for you right here. Each designer has invited a friend as a guest so there's twice the inspiration this time around. Be sure to check it out!

 Fusion Challenge for January

I decided to use both the photograph and the sketch. Looking at the photo, I took three elements:  the wooden boards, the color combination of turquoise, gray, and white and the keys.

Key

I scored the gray portion of the card to represent the gray boards in the photograph, and added two shades of turquoise to the right side of the card following the sketch. The key (Papertrey Ink "Lock and Key") was die cut three times from silver paper and layered for another bit of dimension. I didn't have any stamped sentiments that worked well, so went to my digital files and found this circle. It was filed without any reference to the designer. I resized it, added two words to the center to create a sentiment with the key filling in for the last "word," and die cut it with Simon Says "Stitched Circles." Finally I adhered the focal piece to a white card base, and then decided to add the three silver hearts that fell out of the key die.

CASology: Gray

  • by

After the combo red, black, and white, gray might be one of my favorite colors. Strangely enough I don't often pull that color for cards very often. But this week's CASology Challenge encouraged me to change that.

Week 279 - Gray

My favorite gray cardstocks are all made by Simon Says. There are three gradations of it, and this time I pulled the darkest of the three: Slate. The patterned paper came from the Pinkfresh Studio "Live More" collection, and both were part of the Simon Says Card Kit from August. (I have three boxes of papers and embellishments from old Simon Says kits, and need to pull them out more often.) The sentiment is from Papertrey Ink's "Wet Paint II" die collections. I die cut three of them and layered them for some dimension. Couldn't be a simpler card.

GrayCelebrate

It's a frigid day here in Western New York, in the teens with an even colder wind chill. A friend treated me to lunch at the Monroe Golf Club. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas, and the food was superb. Home now, snuggled in with a bit of crafting time.

Two Cards; Two Challenges

  • by

As soon as I saw the Color Throw Down Challenge this week, I knew I'd want to get a card made for it. Gold, Silver, and Black—what's not to like?

ColorThrowDown471

There was still a pile of silver snowflakes laying on my desk from a previous project as well as a piece of True Black cardstock with a gold sentiment that didn't make the cut for another project.

CTDMerry

All it took then was to die cut the black piece with a Stitched Rectangle die (Simon Says), adhere it to a piece of gold cardstock (Michael's) and add the snowflakes. I also added two gold sequins and some PTI rainstones to the center of the snowflakes for a little bling.

CTDMerryFlat

The second challenge was inspired by left-over pieces on the desk, as well. As soon as I saw the Freshly Made Sketches design, I knew I had the start of a card.

FMS Final 315-001

There was a plaid oval left over from the card I posted here and I found the silver JOY in my drawer of previous die cut images. I added a second silver oval, and some Holly Jolly dies with red Amuse pearls to finish off the design.

JoyFMS

I brushed the holly leaves with a Spectrum Noir clear glitter pen. This angle shows the glitter in the plaid paper by My Mind's Eye ("Comfort & Joy") as well.

JOYflat

Although I've finished the bulk of the Christmas cards that we send out each year, I'm glad to have a few extras to add to the mix.

Fusion: Red Christmas Challenge

  • by

A quick post for the Fusion: Red Christmas challenge. I've admired the challenges here for a long time. One of the things I particularly like is there are always three choices. You can use the photo, the sketch, or combine them.

Fusion

My card follows the sketch this time. I was also attracted to the photo, and although I have a sizeable collection of pitchers I don't own any good stamps so I took the plaid runner for my inspiration. I think it's the sketch, however, that is the real inspiration here.

Merry

I die cut an oval with one of my old Spellbinder sets from a piece of plaid paper from the My Mind's Eye "Comfort and Joy" paper pad. I silver embossed the sentiment from Papertrey's "Rustic Wreath" set, and added two snowflakes cut from a shimmery paper from my stash. The snowflakes are from My Favorite Things "Stylish Snowflakes." I admired them last year but they were out of stock until after the holiday, but I picked them up on sale later. I'd forgotten about them until I reorganized my dies last week.

MerryFlat

Sadly, you can't see in any of the photos that the white line in the plaid is a glittery one. It makes the card much more festive than it appears here. To finish off the card, I added two rhinestones.

MerryClose

Hope your weekend is a lovely one. I'm looking forward to a little time with my oldest granddaughter tomorrow afternoon, and a day of crafting. Our tree is finally up, lit, and decorated and just in time as we have family coming for supper on Sunday, and the book group on Monday evening.

Papertrey Ink November Blog Hop & Time Out Challenge

  • by

It's the 25th of the month, and that means it's time for the November Blog Hop at Papertrey Ink. The inspiration piece this month was really lovely.

6a00d8341c64e753ef01b7c92a6d94970b-450wi

I took my cues from the plaid napkin, the beautiful swag on the chair, and the large gold sentiment in the middle of the table.

PTIBlogHop1

With the exception of the plaid paper (unknown from stash) and the large gold sentiment (Technique Tuesday), all the supplies are Papertrey Ink:  Winter Berries (transformed to fall berries with Canyon Clay and Terracotta Tile inks), Leaf Prints, and the tiny sentiment from Gathered Garden—all adhered to a Canyon Clay card base.

PTINovBlogHop2

This card also fits a new-to-me challenge: Time Out Challenges. The current challenge is Inspired by Words: Gratitude.

GRATITUDE BADGE

For those celebrating in the U.S., I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.

Fall Cards: Part 3

  • by

I'm back to share the last of the fall birthday cards.

HB

I had a few scraps of the watercolor paper I created for an earlier card, and didn't want to throw them out. I love the unusual sentiments in Papertrey's "Initial Sentiments: Birthday" so started with that, and added a strip of the watercolor paper and a strip of beautiful metallic gold paper from Michael's. I'd used up all that gold paper, and couldn't replace it at our local Michael's, but found four sheets of it at a Michael's in Chicago, and brought them all home. They are 12 x 12 sheets, so I think I'll be good for a long time.

Another new die, Pretty Pink Posh's " Stitched Foliage" was perfect for a fall accent. I did cut two of them, and tied them with some fine gold string.

HBClose

Last, a CAS design, once again with the Pretty Pink Posh "Stitched Foliage" leaves.

3Leaves

After some simple scoring on the Classic Kraft card base, I added three die cut leaves with a bow from PTI's twine, and a die cut sentiment from "Wet Paint II" in Dark Chocolate.

3LeavesFlat

All the cards are now off in the mail to their recipients. Now I need to get busy with the early December birthday cards. (To say nothing of all the Christmas cards that need to be made!)

Fall Cards: Part 1

  • by

November brings a long list of folks with birthdays and anniversaries, so I spent much of my free time the last two weeks getting cards made. There was a group of people for whom I thought I could create the same or similar cards. I pulled out some favorite Papertrey Ink products and papers and set to work. You'd think they would have come together quickly, but it didn't turn out that way.

4FallCards

All four cards share the die cut from "Rustic Wreath" and preprinted diecuts from the "Color Pop: Autumn" Mini-Market Kit from last fall.

Celebrate1

The card base here is Classic Kraft with the "Celebrate" from "Birthday Cheer" cut from Terracotta Tile and the wreath from Soft Stone. I added a few Amuse pearls in brown to finish it off.

Celebrate2

Essentially the same, this card uses a piece of Simon Says Woodgrain paper, the wreath from Classic Kraft as well as a die cut bow from "Gathered Garden" and some enamel dots from Freckled Fawn.

Bountiful2

Same design, but a different greeting from the Color Pop kit, and some scored lines as an accent.

Bountiful

This is probably my favorite. A different orientation but all the elements remain the same. The card is Canyon Clay, and the wreath and sentiment were die cut from Fine Linen.

BountifulFlat

I have some more to share next time.

CASology: Cherish

  • by

Week 272 - Cherish

This week's challenge at CASology is "Cherish," and I have a quick and easy card to enter. The striped background with the metallic heart is actually a the card front from a pack of inexpensive cards I bought ages ago at Michaels. I cut down the front of it with one of the Simon Says "Stitched Rectangle" dies, and mounted it on a card made with Papertrey Ink's True Black cardstock.

LOVE

All that was left to do was to die cut Papertrey Ink's "Wonderful Words: Love" die which I did three times, and stacked them.

LOVEstacked

Even with the striped background, to me this is clearly a CAS card—hope it fits with the CASology standards!

The Heart Desires Halloween Challenge

  • by

I have three Halloween cards to share, one of which I'll enter in this month's challenge at The Heart's Desire.

20728212_1522716751122890_7179819622384242700_n

It was Nan who inspired me to get going with a few Halloween cards. Luckily I had a stash of already die cut and colored elements, a couple of new dies to play with, and a little bit of time.

Halloween3

I started off with a pile of papers and elements on my desk, and two dies I've never used: MFT's "Essential Cover-up: Vertical" and Memory Box's "Group of Ghosts." I also had a Hero Art's stamp and die set I purchased last year, but didn't end up using, "Witch's Feet." True Black and Orange Zest cardstock make for the perfect Halloween combination.

Witch'sHat

This card uses the MFT's framing die, a scrap of scrapbook paper, and the Hero Art's Witch's Feet set. I die cut the feet, stamped them in black, and colored them with an orange Tombow markers. The hat is from a sticker sheet filed in my "Fall" sticker folder, but I don't have the manufacturer's name. It's been there at least a year. The sentiment also comes from the Hero Art's set.

Broomjpg

Last year some of my Halloween cards used the Papertrey Ink "Friendship Jar: Fall Fillers," and this image is one I die cut and colored last year. The PTI Cover Plate: "Horizontal Stripes" was in a folder of precut dies—how nice that there was an Orange Zest one. The sentiment came from the same sticker sheet as the witch's hat in the first card.

Ghosts

For the first card, I die cut the MFT die from the scrapbook paper to get the insert for the focal image. This time I used the frame which worked out perfectly. I had two sets of the Happy Halloween sentiment in my stash which I had cut last year with the Silhouette, and didn't use. The ghosts I die cut this year (2 sets of them) and the "EEK" is another one of the stickers. Thanks to saving my die cuts from last year, this year's cards came together pretty quickly.

I'm off to check out the other entries in the Halloween challenge and to look for some inspiration for next year's cards.

Monday Memo: Way Late

  • by

I really intended to do a Monday Memo post a week ago yesterday. It. didn't. happen. Here's why: when we got back from the wedding in Boston, my volunteer commitments were heavier than usual. One of the biggest ones was planning and preparing for a volunteer luncheon that will actually happen while we're in Chicago next week. It's for the volunteers at a local food pantry. There are a huge group of volunteers who work the Monday, Wednesday, Friday food cupboard, volunteers (some are the same) who work the mobile food pantry (fresh produce, dairy, etc) every other Tuesday, and another group who work in the Foodlink garden which supplies produce for both food operations in the summer. We're hoping to build community among the volunteers as well as thank them for all their time.

Since most of the volunteers are also clients of the food pantry, we purchased gift cards. I made a set of gift card holders, cutting them with the Silhouette using some of my two-sided scrapbook papers. Then I die cut and stamped a frame from "Fillable Frames #11," and added a stamped frame and sentiment from "Fillable Frames Additions #2." It's amazing how often those "oldies but goodies" come in handy.

GiftCards

The gardening crew are neighbors of the church where the food cupboard is located or members of our congregation. We purchased gardening gloves and wrote notes to each of them. I bought seed packets and attached them to the front of the cards. The sentiment is from Papertrey Ink's "Garden Variety."

GardenerGifts

GardenerClose

Yesterday I finished all the shopping and ordering for the luncheon itself. Tomorrow Tracy and I will get the tables to the church that are needed for the luncheon, and I think I'll be done. I'm really sorry to be away when it happens, but we're on babysitting duty in Chicago next week while Sarah is at a week long retreat.

Now for the content of the intended post. Two weekends ago we were in Boston for the very elegant wedding of my daughter-in-law's youngest sister and her high school sweetheart. They went to college in Boston, and have never left. Leon's family is from China, and ten of his relatives came from China for the wedding. None of them had ever been to the United States before. I think they had a fabulous time. Friday night, Paul hosted a dinner primarily for them as well as the rest of the family. It was held on the 52nd floor of the building where Leon works. Here's the view we had of Boston, the river, and Cambridge beyond.

On Saturday we took the little girls to The New England Aquarium.

PA070314ed

I'll be back soon with more photos for Sandi's Five in Five meme that I took at the penguin exhibit. The two older girls had a fun with the sculptures as well as the real animals and fish.

10.7AtTheAquarium

The wedding was on Sunday. Most of the day was taken up with preparations. It was a big wedding party. Karen has a large group of very close friends from both college and growing up here in Rochester, so preparations took awhile. Pictures outside the hotel (where the wedding took place) started an hour and a half before the ceremony. Luckily, we had great weather. Here are my favorites from the photo sessions before the wedding. All three little girls "walked" down the aisle. (Actually Dad carried Madelyn, and Ella held her mother's hand. Skylar walked with her cousin, fourth from the right in the photo below.)

No photos were allowed during the ceremony which I totally understand. I'll be looking forward to seeing the professional photos. The photographers were wonderful.

We had a great weekend. We had a little time to wander around on Saturday afternoon, visited Faneuil Hall, and had breakfast twice at Flour Bakery where I had the best breakfast sandwich I ever had. Thanks to Nan who recommended the bakery. A box of sticky buns came home with us as well on Monday.

10.9BreakfastSandwich

On that delicious note, I'll sign off! Hopefully, it won't be so long between blog posts, but with another trip in the offing, it may be November until I'm back on a regular schedule.

NBUS #3

  • by

NBUS

It's the last day of the NBUS Challenge over at Darnell's, so I pulled out two new items in my stash:  the October Simon Says Card Kit and a stamp set from Clearly Gina K. The stamp set includes a large, stunning image of a calla lily but also a wonderful set of sentiments. It's my first purchases from Gina K. and I'm impressed with it.

Congrats

All the rest of the supplies came from the Simon Says kit:  beautiful papers from My Mind's Eye from their Blush collection, a piece of Burnished Rose Mirrored cardstock, cream cardstock, and a jar of SSS Steel Navy embossing powder.

CongratsClose

This angle highlights the bronze paper and bronze stripes in the patterned paper. You can almost see the sheen of the embossing powder which is really lovely. This is the last card I need for October birthdays and anniversaries. I need to start thinking about a Christmas card design, and be sure I have the beginning of November covered. There's a huge collection of cards linked to Darnell's challenges—plenty of inspiration here.

Time to Party & More NBUS

  • by

NBUS

I have another entry into the NBUS (Never Before Used Stuff) Challenge hosted by Darnell. In my last PTI order I received a new stamp set called "Hey, Stacks." It's a great set with lots of options for sentiments and a variety of stripes of different weights. The MISTI came in really handy again in order to get vibrant colors for the stripes. Lining up the lines and sentiments wasn't as hard as I originally thought. I drew two light pencil lines and was able to line everything up pretty effectively. I'm thinking I'll find lots of uses for the set.

TimeToPartyVertical

I chose orange, navy, and a lime green color combination which seemed like good party colors. As I often do, I die cut the focal panel as well as the navy panel with a stitched rectangle die from Simon Says. This was actually my second card. I had some black ink on my hands when I stamped the sentiment the first time and got a smudge on the card. I solved that problem by cutting the smeared section off, and ended up with this:

TimeToPartyLandscape

I don't like it quite as much, but I was happy to salvage it. Both cards could easily be sent to either a man or a woman, though both of these are off to guys!

NBUS Challenge and Monday Memo

  • by

Sho

I've missed the first eight days of the NBUS Challenge, but I'll have entries for the last few days, I'm sure. NBUS stands for "Never Before Used Stuff," and I have plenty of that. Today is my sister-in-law's birthday, and I used the new Papertrey Ink "Sunflower Harvest" stamps. The stamp set was released in August, but this is my first play with it. I must admit that multiple step stamps do cause me some frustration, even with the MISTI. But in the end, I was happy with the outcome.

SunflowerBD

In addition to "Sunflower Harvest," I used the "Mix and Mat: Postal" die to cut a piece of MFT "Gingham Galore" patterned paper and adhered it all to a kraft card base.

We had a lovely week. Our neighbor has a cottage on Tar Island in the 1000 Islands, and invited us for a couple of days. He has no internet access, and almost no cell access, so I'm way behind on emails and blog reading. We had beautiful weather, and it was a very relaxing few days. On Thursday, Paul and Tracy golfed. I stayed behind and spent the morning reading in the beautiful sunshine. I finished both books for tonight's book group, as well as Elizabeth Strout's Anything is Possible. I read her earlier novel, My Name is Lucy Barton, and although I enjoyed it, it wasn't as good as I had anticipated. Anything is Possible is a group of short stories which provides fascinating background stories to people mentioned in My Name is Lucy Barton as well as Lucy herself. The collection is much like the linked stories in Olive Kitteridge which I loved. Yesterday I picked up a copy of My Name is Lucy Barton to skim through now that I know so much more about the characters.

Later in the day, another couple from our church arrived, and Paul took us on a boat tour on the St. Lawrence.

This is Boldt Castle which was built in the early 1900's by George Boldt for his beloved wife, Louise. Sadly she died before the castle was completed, and George left it unfinished.

It's now owned by the Thousand Island Bridge Authority who have renovated the grounds and are beginning a restoration of the interior as well. Neither of these photos show the beautiful flowers and landscaping that they have installed.

I played my first bocce game ever on Friday. Sarah (our friend) and I were way ahead for most of the game, but the men came back to win by one point. Nonetheless, it was great fun, and I've finally found a game where I am reasonably competent!

We're here just a few days before taking off again for a wedding in Boston, but I hope to be back the next three days with some more NBUS!

Shortly after I wrote this post, I heard about the terrible shooting last night in Las Vegas. Words escape me, as these events seem to be happening more and more often around the world. But my thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims as well as all those who experienced this tragic event, and all those who responded to the violence, risking their lives to help those in need.

Papertrey Ink September 2017 Blog Hop & Time Out

  • by

As soon as I saw this month inspiration for the Papertrey September Ink Blog Hop, I knew I wanted to participate. I love the colors and the way they pop against the black background.

BlogHop

Although it's certainly not necessary to use a bird as the focal point, I turned to one of my favorite PTI sets, "Songbirds," and used some of the same colors and elements seen in the inspiration piece.

PTISept

There are no wing dies in this set so I drew and fussy-cut one for the little bird. I sponged some "Honey Nut," "Cocoa Bean," and a touch of "Terracotta Tile" on the bird after die cutting it with Rustic White cardstock. I trimmed one branch from the leaf dies after they were cut from New Leaf and Green Parakeet cardstock. The little flowers were punched from very old punches in my collection. The banner and sentiment are both part of the "Songbirds" set.

PTISeptFlat

Before adhering the black piece to the Pure Poppy card (love red and black!) I adhered a piece of fun foam to the back so it's popped up a bit. I'd love to have a stamp set that features the bird and flowers in the inspiration piece, but "Songbirds" will have to suffice for now.

I'm linking up to Papertrey Ink's Blog Hop and also to the Time Out Challenge:  "Paint The Flying Spirit Of The Birds Rather than its Feathers."
