A Trio of Rainbow Cards

  • by

Kristina Werner produced the first video for the Online Card Class: Stretch Your Stamps 2 , and demonstrated how to create a watercolored background using the Hero Arts Highline Ironwork stamp.

Highline

I photographed my piece when I was done, but didn't check the photo carefully, and it was too out of focus to share. Unusual, but it happens when you're in a hurry. You may be able to get the idea from the cards that follow. After watercoloring the piece, I cut it apart in strips and with several die cuts, and managed to create three cards. I still have a couple of hearts left over.

RainbowBD

I used the Wonderful Words: Birthday stamp and die from Papertrey Ink for this as well as a four hearts die from Simon Says.

RainbowThankYou

This one uses a couple of the strips I cut, and Wonderful Words: Thank You from Papertrey.

RainbowThankYouClose

I love the bright rainbow colors against both black and white, but they work with bright cardstock as well. Here's the last card with Sunshine cardstock from Simon Says.

RainbowSunshine

It's another Wonderful Words stamp and die ("Hello"), along with a few wood veneer hearts from Studio Calico that I colored with a Copic marker and highlighted with a bit of Wink of Stella glitter. I stacked the die cut again with several words cut from the Sunshine cardstock.

Watercoloring the white embossed piece took a bit of time and patience, but it was well worth the effort to get three cards into the file!

I'll be linking these up to the Simon Says Monday Challenge which is "Anything Goes."

Cards and Two Challenges

  • by

This is my second post today after only two posts in the previous week. It's been some time since I sat down to create some cards. The first order of business this morning was to get cards for the rest of August ready to send. One anniversary card and one birthday card were already in the card file, but I needed an anniversary card for my sister-in-law and brother-in-law. I've seen a lot of stacked die cuts around the blogosphere recently, and decided to give it a try. It was super easy, and I love the effect.

Love

The background image is from a new Papertrey set called Ombre Builder. It's not the kind of set I often purchase, but I'm pretty sure it will get a lot of use. I love these little triangles, and am entering this in the Moxie Fab "Trendy Triangles" challenge and the Addicted to CAS challenge:  Geometric. The Love die and sentiment are both Papertrey Ink, "Wonderful Words: Love."

The second card was for a much sadder occasion. Another untimely and unexpected death of a man who we knew through Tracy's best friend. Jack and Louise are next-door neighbors of Pete and Arlene's and we've always enjoyed spending time with them at parties, weddings, and other events.

SympathyFull

The idea for this card came from the Online Card Class: Stretch Your Stamps 2 for stamping on dark cardstock. My card is a very simple one compared to the card demonstrated in class. I've read a lot about Hero Arts Unicorn White pigment ink, so ordered it the last time I placed an online order. I'm pretty impressed. The stamp is "Harvest Berries" by Papertrey, and the sentiment is from a Hero Arts set (don't have the name.) I used tiny pearls for the berries.

SympathyClose

I made this last card awhile ago, but never posted it. I found it when I was looking through my card files this morning. It's a perfect card for Virginia's View's lastest challenge: Shaped Cards. It will be perfect for one of the grandchildren come October.

Jack-o-Lantern

All the papers are American Craft textured cardstock, and the features are an old Sizzix die. The googly eyes came from Michael's.

Off to the gym. Hopefully after dinner, I can get back to the crafting table.

Online Card Class: Stretch Your Stamps 2

  • by

It's not the first time, nor will it be the last, but I've overextended myself with online instruction once again. This week I had lessons in two drawing classes, the phone photography class at BPC, and the new Online Card Class. Since neither of the drawing classes have lifetime access, it's been critical to keep up with them. I'm definitely a newbie to the sketching/drawing world, so it's also been very time-consuming. Add Sarah, Adam, and Caleb's visit plus daily trips to Conesus Lake this week, and it's really quite amazing that I have a card to share!

Two of Sarah and Adam's friends have just adopted a beautiful baby boy. We were lucky enough to meet William the day we were in Chicago earlier this month. I wanted to send a gift and card back when Sarah and Adam left today, so it was a good opportunity to try one of the techniques from Days 3 & 4–using alphabet and sentiment stamps.

William

This is a take on Tami Hartley's class on Day 4 where she created a banner for her sentiment by using alpha stamps. At first I thought I must have purged all my small alphas, but finally found an old Technique Tuesday one that fit on the banner from My Favorite Things Blueprints 5 die set (another item that's seeing it's first use.) The striped paper is a left-over from the other baby card I made recently, and the banners were cut from a piece of paper I watercolored. Three little hearts (using an old paper punch) with little pearls from AMuse finished it off. The "welcome" was selectively stamped from a sentiment in the "Baby Button Bits" set by Papertrey Ink.

I'm linking this up with the Simon Says Work It Wednesday challenge which is BLUE this month.

Sarah, Adam, and Caleb headed back to Chicago this morning. We've been blessed by such a nice long visit, and I'm going to miss that two-year-0ld voice (as well as his parents) every morning for quite some time. FaceTime is fabulous, but it sure doesn't replace the real deal!

The Birthday Girl

  • by

Yesterday was Sarah's birthday, and luckily for us, it was the second year in a row she's been here to celebrate. I didn't post yesterday because the celebration didn't end until tonight when Adam arrived. Actually the birthday began mid-week when her first gift arrived from Amazon. Sarah's become the DIY queen in the last several months. She's been finding free or very inexpensive furniture and other goodies on Craig's list and refinishing or repurposing them. So this year, she asked for a power tool. After much consultation with her very handy father, she decided on a scroll saw.

IMG_6617ed_blog

Somehow I haven't gotten a photo of the really cute toys she's made for Caleb–a whale, a school of fish, a darling hedgehog and more. Today she finished painting and adding the oil/beeswax finish to all of them.

Somewhere in her search about the Rochester area, she came across a reference to the Avon Flea Market. We've never been, but yesterday morning we headed out. It turned out to be a lot of fun and we all came home with something.

IMG_6645ed_blog

Turns out Matchbook cars are a big collectors' item, and there were hundreds of them for Caleb to look at.

IMG_6646ed_blog

But interestingly, he didn't come home with any of them. Instead he came home with a bin of great alphabet blocks that were 50% off the already reasonable asking price.

IMG_6665ed_blog

I bought an old dictionary for $3 to use in art journaling and an antique (or just old) folding six-foot measuring stick.

IMG_6668ed_blog

Tracy and a friend have gotten into model railroads since they've retired, and Tracy found a really cute N-gauge train that works great. (I think Caleb thought this was the best find of all.)

IMG_6677ed_blog

But Sarah negotiated the best deal for a mitre saw.

IMG_6669ed_blog

Last night we joined Tracy's mom and siblings at Conesus Lake where they've rented a cottage for the week, and after dinner celebrated with a cake.

IMG_6687ed_blog

Tonight Matt, Betsy, and Skylar came to dinner, and we had an ice cream pie from Sarah's favorite soft ice cream shop. Their chocolate almond ice cream is to die for, and the pie might even be better!

BDCake8.4_blog

Given Sarah's new hobby, I decided to break out a stamp set I've had for a couple of years. I've hardly used it, and when I bought it I certainly didn't have Sarah in mind. It's a definite case of a card Maille Belle did for the release of the set at Papertrey Ink.

SarahBD

All in all, I think Sarah had a good birthday. She was definitely glad to see Adam tonight who just returned from a mission trip in Havana, Cuba. Their departure was delayed by 12 hours, so he was a day late arriving in Chicago, and didn't get here until just after we finished dinner, but before Matt and Betsy had to take Skylar home for bed. They'll be here for the rest of the week, and we'll be heading to the lake after naps each day.

Baby Shower

  • by

I'm off in a few minutes to a baby shower. It will be their first, a little boy due next month. A happy occasion, and the grandmother-to-be who is my good friend is excited beyond words!

Once again the Papertrey Ink Phrase Play #5 die came to the rescue.

Baby

I used piece of American Craft 12X12 scrapbook paper that's been in my stash for a long time to cut the die, and Spring Rain cardstock by PTI for the card base. The layered felt sticker has been in my stash for a long time, too.

BabyClosejpg

I only have a couple baby-themed stamp sets, and couldn't find any sentiment that worked so I created on on the computer and ran the card base through the printer before starting the card front.

Hope you're having a great weekend. Ours is pretty quiet aside from the fact that we have a busy, happy 2 1/2 year old living with us!

Sad Time

  • by

It's been a tough week. Betsy's mom passed away last Tuesday after a brief bout with cancer. She was just 65. In April she went for a routine physical, having no symptoms, and within a few days had a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer. Sally was one of the most positive people ever, and always thinking about everyone else, right to the last minute. She will be missed so much.

I've made cards for Betsy, both of her sisters, and her dad. Paul's card is a duplicate of one I've made before so I'm not posting it again. I tried a new watercolor techniques for two of the cards. I've always thought sympathy cards needed to be simple, and watercolor seems to fit the bill.

Sympathy1

Sympathy2

Both of these cards were stamped with a light Distress Ink which fades into the background as you watercolor the separate petals. The key is never to watercolor two petals touching one another so you keep the definition of the flower. Although it takes some time and the outline of the stamps is still more visible than I think it should be, I'm happy with the first attempts.

The last card uses my favorite watercolor technique: a white embossed image that is then watercolored. I've learned to do it in a window so I can see the outline of the white embossing.

Sympathy3Close

We made a quick trip to Chicago this week to bring Sarah, Caleb, and Sadie (their dog) back to Rochester. Adam is in Cuba on a mission trip. When he returns this weekend, he'll drive to Rochester, spend a few days with us before they return to Chicago. We're always glad to have lots of time with family, so this makes a sad time easier.

Sending Sunshine

  • by

Last night when I should have been packing for our camping trip, I came across the new ColourQ challenge, and thought it would be perfect with the current CAS(E) This Sketch challenge. And I had the perfect (new) stamp set to put to use:  "Doodlie Do" by Papertrey Ink. Here are the challenges:

2Challenges_edited-1

And here's my interpretation:

SendingSunshine

I love these bright colors! I embossed and masked the flower, then the leaves and colored them with Copics. The sentiment is from the same set. And it's another one for my encouragement card stash.

SunshineClose

I'll pop this into the Curtain Call Anniversary challenge, "Anything Goes," as well.

Anything goes

In about an hour we're off to Selkirk Shores on eastern Lake Ontario for two nights of camping with our friends, Bob and Cathy. It's supposed to be pretty decent (80's during the day), but chilly at night (50's), with a chance of showers on Sunday.  I had lunch with a friend on Tuesday who recommended driving up to Clayton, NY on the St. Lawrence River. There's an antique boat museum and a classy new hotel that just opened up as well as some "cute shops." Not sure the guys will be interested in the latter, but I think Clayton's the plan for Sunday afternoon.

Card Set

  • by

Alexa once again shared her photo and digital gifts with a download this week. As soon as I saw these delightful typewriters, I knew I'd make some simple, one layer cards. Sadly, I'm in almost constant need of encouragement cards, so it's nice to have a little stash.

IMG_5467_blog

After printing the typewriters on Lumijet Fine Art Ink Jet paper, I stamped each with two sentiments I cut apart from Hero Arts "Everyday Sayings." Then I found color coordinated cardstock in my scrap files to match each of the typewriters, and adhered it all to top folding cards made from Papertrey's Rustic White cardstock which almost perfectly matches the Fine Art Ink Jet paper.

Celebrate!

  • by

A quick post to share a card that uses, yet again, a new die for the first time and links to two challenges. I ordered the Block Talk die from Papertrey Ink last month, but haven't had a chance to pull it out until today. "Celebrate" is just one of three words included with the die.

Celebrate

I cut the die twice–once in gold metallic and once in silver metallic and inserted the silver strips into the gold die. The stars came from two "matching" dies from Simon Says:  "Holiday Shapes" and "Large Holiday Shapes." Those dies get lots of use! The beautiful, slightly textured purple paper is (I think) from Bazzill that I picked up during Archivers going-out-of-business sale in January. The silver metallic paper is from Paper Source, but I'm not sure where I purchased the gold paper.

This is another entry to Virginia's View Die Cut Challenge.

V. V. Challenge #5 (2)

And it will be my first entry to the Moxie Fab "Wonderful Words Challenge," which was to include a die cut word in your project.

Happy Anniversary X Two

  • by

My niece and her husband celebrated their second anniversary this weekend. Their wedding was one of the most fun weddings I've ever attended, and the two of them couldn't be sweeter! Here's a more elegant verson of the anniversary card I made for friends a couple of weeks ago.

Anniversary

You need to see it up close to get a good look at the metallic papers.

AnniversaryClose

The embossed silver cardstock came from Michaels, and the gold is from Paper source. I used Simon Says woodgrain again for the Phrase Play #5 die cut from Papertrey Ink. The stamp is from the same set. I couldn't seem to get a good picture of the sequins, but there's a pretty clear sequin from Pretty Pink Posh nestled into a larger gold one from Michaels.

AnniversaryInside

The inside sentiment is from Papertrey's Delightful Dahlia's Additions. The hearts on both the front and the inside are from the Hearts and Arrows die from Savvy.

The next card was inspired by the current CAS-ual Friday challenge to create a card with hearts in summer colors.

CAS

Hearts

I die cut the Tic Tac Toe Hearts into the front of the card, then colored the hearts with my Copic markers and laid them back into the original die cut. The sentiment comes from two Simon Says sets: Happy, and Color and Sunshine.

HeartsClose

It makes for a nice one-layer, flat card that will be winging its way in August to friends on the west coast.

I'll link both up to Virginia's Die Cut Challenge as well.

V. V. Challenge #5 (2)

Before I go, I thought I'd share a few photos (all from my phonte) from our Fourth of July birthday celebration.

IMG_6270ed_blog

We had bruschetta chicken, and orzo salad with spinach and feta, potato salad, a green salad, and rolls for dinner. I didn't get a photo but we had chocolate mousse cake from Joey B's for dessert. My mother-in-law requested it, but didn't expect we'd be able to get it direct from the restaurant. It was delicious.

Here we all are—a couple folks are looking rather serious, but I only took one quick photo so the food wouldn't get cold.

IMG_6271ed_blog

After dinner we drove to Canandaigua Lake, boarded the Canandaigua Lady, and watched the fireworks from the lake. It was a bit chilly, but we were well-prepared, and the fireworks were wonderful. We got a beautiful sunset as well.

Fireworks

Red, White, and Blue

  • by

Happy 4th of July! I'm grateful every single day for the freedoms I have living here. It's an extra-special day for us because we're celebrating my mother-in-law's 85th birthday today. Tomorrow is the actual day, but everyone is coming here for dinner and then we're headed to Canandaigua to board the Canandaigua Lady for a tour on the lake and to watch the fireworks. It's quite cool here this morning, but clear and sunny!

I have three red, white, and blue cards to share. I'm entering all three cards in the Fusion Challenge this week:  Red, White, and Blue. The last one fits both the color and the sketch challenge.

Fusion copy

The first is the birthday card for Ellie. Once I created the anniversary cards here, I knew this die would make an awesome shaker card. I ended up taking the first card apart and redoing it. I folded a piece of clear cardstock, sealed two sides with Washi tape, and dumped the star sequins inside. Then I sealed the top when I adhered the white background. It makes for a much flatter and neater card.

HB

The die cut and sentiment are both Papertrey Ink, and the cardstock is Simon Says Lipstick Red and Soft Navy. I think I found the stars at Michaels, but it was awhile ago.

HBClose

I'm entering this one in the Simon Says Wednesday Challenge:  Shake It, and Virginia's Die Cut challenge.

V. V. Challenge #5 (2)

The next two cards use the July Simon Says Card Kit. This kit is going to get a lot of use! The first one is for friends who received some tough news this week. We're hoping it will all work out, but I wanted to get a card of encouragement out to them ASAP.

SendingPrayers

Absolutely everything on this card came from the kit. I love all the patterned papers, and managed to get five of them on this card!

PrayersClose

Even the inside message came from the kit.

PrayersInside

The last card was inspired by the Fusion Sketch and this card by Shari Carroll.

BestWishes

More yummy patterned papers from the kit, as well as a Lifestyle Crafts embossing folder (never used before) and a die cut from Papertrey's "Bubble Talk" with an embossed sentiment from PTI's "Faux Ribbon" (one of my oldest PTI sets).

BestWishesClose

If you're celebrating today, I hope it's a wonderful and safe holiday!

Welcome, Baby!

  • by

I'm back with a card for The Card Concept challenge site. The current challenge is "Oh, Baby!" and I needed a baby card for good friends who just had an adorable baby girl.

Baby

I had a lot of fun creating this card. I started by applying embossing paste with  Simon Says "Falling Hearts" stencil. While that was drying I die cut two tags with Papertrey Ink's Tag Sale #5, one from the Bazzil pink cardstock and one from a vellum that is also embossed with tiny hearts. The sentiment is from PTI's "Fillable Frames: Addition 2." I tied a Paper Source pink ribbon to the tag and adhered everything to the card base. The gorgeous sequins are new ones from Pretty Pink Posh. This fits the Card Concept category "Clean and Layered."

BabyClose

I combined sentiments from Avery Elle's "Oh, Happy Day!" and Simon Says "Favorite Flowers" for the inside greeting. I just love how they work together.

Happy Anniversary & Two Challenges

  • by

My dear friends celebrated their 66th anniversary yesterday. They no longer live in the same building (but are at the same facility) so this year I made an anniversary card for both of them to have in their rooms.

AnniversaryCards

I was anxious to put this new die from Papertrey Ink to work, and I'm sure it's going to get a lot of use. I love the simplicity of it, and the accompanying stamps make it very versatile. I die cut it from Simon Say's woodgrain cardstock and added the wood veneer heart, colored with a Copic marker so I could enter them in the CAS-ology Challenge this week:  Wood.

Here's a closer look.

Papertrey Ink June Blog Hop

  • by

The inspiration for Papertrey Ink's June Blog Hop was a photo, sketch, and color challenge. This was the way Nicole described it:

You can choose to work with any of the ideas above or use other components of the inspiration photo to jump start your creation.  Have fun with it and challenge yourself to work outside of your comfort zone!

I created three cards, using each of the sketches, and combined one of the sketches with one of the downloadable color combinations. In my ongoing attempt to use stamps that haven't seen enough (or any) love, each card uses at least one stamp or die that I've never used before.

Here's the first sketch and the color inspiration.

Sketch1

ColorInspiration

And my interpretation:

Card 1

This color combination is definitely not in my comfort zone (nor is trying to combine five different colors on one card.) I began by die cutting frames from Framed Out #1 and Framed Out #12 as well as a collection of flowers from Button Stacks II. (The Button Stacks II dies are my unused item.) I took a little liberty with the sketch and stamped the sentiment from "Fillable Frame #4 inside one of the frames. The Spring Rain color was added with the enamel dot from MME. The rest of the colors were die cut from the corresponding paper in the inspiration piece.

For the second card I used a sketch, but choose my own colors from a pile of scraps laying on my desk waiting to be filed into the scrap paper folders.

Sketch3

Card2

I used a Nestability Small Circles die to cut the circles from Pure Poppy, Tropical Teal, and Summer Sunrise. The star is from Impress, and the sentiment is from another unused (but new) stamp set "Wet Paint II."

The last card is my personal favorite (CAS design), and a masculine one, to boot! I used this sketch:

Sketch2

Card3

I started by stamping a variety of the"Square Prints" designs on Fine Linen cardstock. I've owned the "Square Prints" set since it came out, and don't believe I've ever used it. Liked it when I bought it, and I still do. I cut each square on the diagonal and mounted the resulting triangles under a thin strip of True Black cardstock. The sentiment is from "Botanical Prints."

I'm linking up all three cards to the Simon Says Monday Challenge to use products we ought to use more often. True, true, true.

Mon-challenge-badge_zps05647c53

I was hoping to link up to the blog post this morning, but either TypePad or my internet service were being disagreeable. So now I'm off to check out the inspiration linked here.

Sweet Pea

  • by

One of my goals this year is to try to use all the stamps in my collection. Truthfully, it will probably take me more than a year, but I'm making progress. As soon as I saw the current challenge at Curtain Call, I knew I had the perfect stamp, and one that hasn't seen much use.

Sweet pea edited

Papertrey Ink had a series of stamps several years ago called Year of the Flower. I only purchased two of the twelve, but one of them was "Sweet Pea."

SweetPea

I'm also entering the card into the Less Is More challlenge:  Watercolour. It's a relatively new challenge for me, but one I see frequently on my inspiration journeys around the internet. The cardstock base is a beautiful shimmer one from Papertrey Ink, but it's not showing up well in photographs. The sentiment is also from the Year of the Flower:  Sweet Pea, embossed in white on vellum and stitched down.

SweetPeaClose

Usually I have a receipient in mind when I make a card, but this one originated with the challenge call. It's nice to have a few cards in the file when I need one but don't have the time to create one.
