Gratitude

I read the quotes on A Fancy Word for Simple every day but rarely post. Today’s was too important to miss.

Tuesday: Count your blessings
“For today and its blessings, I owe the world an attitude of gratitude.”

  • My family—a friend of mine lost a daughter to a sudden seizure this week. Nothing strikes fear in my heart more than this. Family is always first on my list of gratitude, but I am even more aware today than usual.
  • Good health.
  • Friends—old and new. Near and far.
  • A job I still enjoy after 36 years.
  • Time to enjoy life.

There are many more, but mostly they fall under one of these categories.

Apple

Apple

A red or green fruit from a tree. Apples are on the grocery list, but this one was in my kitchen:

Today’s prompt from Her Space:  My Space.

A little update for those of you who asked. The wooden apple is just a decoration and sits in one of nine spaces in a shadow box that hangs in my kitchen.

Sun

My SOS photo yesterday was so similar to Anita’s this morning that I did a double-take. The sun is not quite out yet this morning so here’s another shot of "sun" from my trip to the sunflower fields a week ago.

Show Off Sunday

From Her Space:  My Space:

Show Off Sunday

Otherwise knows as S.O.S !!!!

This
is the day when Kirsty and I take a little rest and you can post any
photo (past or present) that you are particularly pleased with. It
could be that you are pleased with the composition of the photo, a
technical aspect, or it is just a moment that you are glad that you
captured. It doesn’t have to fit any theme, so you are completely free
to choose and tell why.

Matt told me about a huge field of sunflowers a few weeks ago, so on my
way to school I stopped and took a few photos. This is one of my
favorites.

Sunflowers seem to typify summer for me. They are so bright and cheery, but there’s no room in my yard for such big flowers. We have a nice sized yard, but very little space that’s sunny.

Black & White

  • by

Tracy and I joined friends at the George Eastman House this afternoon to tour the Ansel Adams exhibit. It was my second trip, and I enjoyed it even more than the first time. Not only is the photography stunning, but the commentary and movies that are part of the exhibit are wonderful. Every time I see one of his photos I see new things. One of my new favorites is a portrait of an old woman taken through a screen door. So expressive. So I came home and wondered what my self-portrait from this morning would look like in black and white. I think I like it better than the color one. I rarely consider black and white, but I think I’m going to go back and do some experimenting with some old photos and compare the color with the B&W. What do you think?

Self-Portrait Saturday

  • by

This weekend we are introducing two new features to HSMS, just to keep
ou on your photograpgy toes! The first of these will be a new regular
‘Self Portrait Saturday’. Take the opportunity once a week to practise
your portrait skills and make a record of your changing self.

So, go for it !!! …S.P.S = self portrait saturday

I’ve enjoyed the photo challenges on Her Space: My Space, but they’ve
upped the ante today. I’m not a fan of any portrait of myself, let
alone self-portraits. If I’m going to do this every Saturday, I’m going
to have to learn how to use the timer on my camera. No time for many
experiments today, so this is me in the bathroom mirror wet hair and
all.

Stone

  • by

A hard solid mineral.  Her Space:  My Space challenge for 8-24. There’s a lot of stone in our space so here are two:

Stone1_w

These stone steps lead from our patio to a lower yard. Our house is built into a hill.

And this stone wall keeps our front yard from falling into our driveway. Our garage is under the house.

White

I’m not sure why today’s challenge from Her Space:  My Space seems particularly daunting. I have a whole set of white china, but didn’t want to copy Anita’s beautiful photo of her cup. Took me all day and photos of several other objects before I settled on the while lilies. They seem to fit Anita’s defintion:  The palest colour and sign of purity.

Her Space:  My Space
challenge–FRIEND–A person you know particularly well. I don’t think it’s cheating to post a photo of your husband as your friend because he certainly is my very best friend, and has been for years.

Wet

  • by

Today’s challenge at Her Space:  My Space is wet:  Covered or saturated with water. This photo is from last month and the story behind it is here. If you look just above the word "WET," you’ll see the spray of water as we tried to get the soap off the poor woodchuck before releasing him into the wild. The white stuff on the ground is the soap suds.

Ramblings

We had a great weekend. Friday we took Matt to Ithaca where he registered at Cornell (in 10 minutes!) and got pretty well settled in his apartment. He is one happy man–loves Cornell ("Everyone is so nice and so helpful,) and loves his apartment in the country (about 7 miles from campus.) Everything went better than planned and we had a beautiful day to do all the moving.

When we left Ithaca it was sunny and 85°. By the time we met up with Bob and Cathy at Sampson State Park on Seneca Lake, it was raining and getting much cooler. We sat in the van for a little over an hour and the rain finally stopped. Later the wind picked up and it got pretty cool, but we had a great fire and a great time. Saturday we spent most of the afternoon touring several of the wineries on Seneca Lake. Bought some great new wines and a few unusual ones.  Also bought the first ice wine I’ve ever liked. (It is really good!) Years ago when our kids were younger we camped and hiked–often one of the 40 high peaks in the Adirondacks. Now it’s camping and wine tasting.

Finally here is today’s challenge from Her Space:  My Space. I didn’t have time to catch up for the days I missed, but here is today’s. Plant:  A green living organism.

Chop, chop

  • by

Today’s challenge from Her Space:  My Space is chop. Years ago my friend, Maddy, taught me how to cut an onion so it’s easy to get pretty uniform pieces. It was amazing to me, and I often think of her when I’m chopping away. My mother died while I was in college so I really never learned much about cooking from here although I inherited and use many of her recipes. So here’s a little chop:

Window

Today’s challenge  from Her Space:  My Space is window:  An opening in the wall, filled with glass.

I took a couple shots today, but decided this one from a rainy day earlier this month was more interesting. We have yellow finches on our bird feeder all day long. I love looking out during meals at our kitchen table and seeing their bright colors.

Pasta

  • by

Today’s challenge from Her Space: My Space is pasta. Ahh, a favorite, and one we are trying to avoid in our effort to fight the inevitable weight gain that comes with getting older! My lovely pasta container sits on our counter. I purchased it many years ago in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. There’s a "matching"  olive oil pitcher as well.

Dog Sitting

  • by

We’re dog sitting for Sarah and Adam, and we’re all loving it! We took a lot of pictures of Sadie chasing the tennis ball this afternoon. There will be more to share after I have time to edit them. This is for Sarah & Adam should they wonder if she is having a good time. (She’s so pooped, she’s been asleep in her crate ever since her after-dinner walk through the park!)
